Thanks for your piece on the regressive Right. I think it speaks to the fact that Trump’s supporters are not conservative but are reactionary. I would like to see them and the current G.O.P. labeled as reactionary and deny them the conservative mantle by all who write about current events.
The only “conservative” phenomenon happening right now is Reagan’s ridicule of the phrase “we’re from the government and we’re here to help” by demonstrating their utter incompetence to get anything constructive done.
Another thoughtful piece, Dan. Thank you. I growled a little, gurgling through my hot chai while reading, but managed to cheer myself up remembering a satirical song by Root Boy Slim: Rich, White, Republican.
The whole point of MAGA now is yes, to carry out faithfully the steps outlined in Project 2025. I listened to a Zoom session Ruth Ben-Ghiat had with Gil Duran, a writer who’s been involved in politics in California. He’s writing a book called Nerd Reich, all about the billionaire tech bros and their dystopian plans.
It seems that Peter Thiel, whose billions gifted us the delightful JD Vance, follows the belief that instead of democracies, there should be “Network Nations” headed by tech CEOs. This is their plan for the US. And they’re not kidding. They’ve already hollowed out much of the government.
Luckily for us, the puppets they’ve chosen to carry this effort out are more like over-reaching buffoons who may not succeed—right now. But the billionaires won’t give up, and if they don’t succeed under Trump, they will pop right back up sooner rather than later. The American people need to know about this, and the Democratic Party needs to expose it and deal with it.
If there is any single lesson in the flukish rise of the Big Bloviator, it is that America truly needs a two-party system (and maybe more). Unaccountably (or at least I can't account for it), one of the parties has suffered a near-terminal case of fatalism, and can't do anything about anything, whether it is global warming, colossal inequality, shooting drowning men, or what have you. Perhaps in time it will find the courage to remove its collective mouth from the leaders ass, or he will die and they will find a bigger ass to kiss (although that is hard to imagine). I have known Republicans all my long life, and have known many good people among them. Yes, they tend to have more of a business orientation than I, a career federal bureaucrat, but I have found it possible to share and even enhance their critique of bureaucracy. If done in a thoughtful manner it is useful, not with the brutish ignorance of the great imposter and his lackeys. Bring back the two party system, the separation of powers, and the loyal opposition!

RIP, Foster.

Sigh…
