Oh Dan, I am so sorry that you stumbled into that cesspool of racism and hate. The photograph at the top of your essay reminded me of similar photographs of horrible people screaming at little kids who were just trying to get to school when school districts were finally forced to desegregate back in the 1960's.

Those people have always been there, of course, but Trump gave them permission to scuttle out from under the rocks where they usually live. He told them it was OK to be bigots. Maybe Dan is right and the number of those people is dwindling. I just hope that not too many more of our immigrant neighbors are killed before the rest of us can vote this terrible administration out of office.

I follow Senator Van Hollen and Rep. Raskin on Facebook. I have stopped reading comments because of what you encountered. The sheer meanness and hate of some comments is genuinely disturbing.

bbb same! I wonder though, how many of these hateful comments are ai/bots? Or are that many actual people really that horrible?

bitchybitchybitchy's avatar

There are probably some bots, but sadly others seem to be real people

Dan, Your essay reminded me of Dr. Bandy Lee's a Yale Medicine Psychiatrist 2017 evaluation of Trump.

"The problem is not Trump as defective as he is. The problem is the 70+ million voters think he is wonderful and voted for him.

Thank you, Dan, for finding a glimmer of hope in the disapproval ratings of immigrant assaults. Since history repeats itself, we need look no further than the KKK and lynchings of blacks and the Nazi Storm-troopers who sent Jews to camps. When a person feels empowered by feeling superior to another class it erases humanity.

Hard to believe that MAGAs think their existence is more deserved than that of their fellow man who might look and think a little differently than they do. Such a sad commentary on what trump wrought.

When we moved to Northern Carroll County in the late 80’s we were shocked to find that they were holding KKK rallies outside of Manchester, MD. We found out because they stood at the only intersection in town fully robed and hooded holding signs- I think advertising the rally. They also stood on Water Tank Road across from a driveway directing people in, I suppose. These people and/or their progeny are still here. Rural small-town America is a cesspit of racism.

You can bet that a large fraction of the people committing or supporting these evil activities do so in the name of Jesus, and even believe he would support them.

Yes, WWJD? He'd shoot through a windshield.

Dan: So sorry you had to experience that cesspool. We all know that the so-called prez will be gone soon, hopefully sooner. But those people who support him will continue to live amongst us. Universally there are mentally ill people everywhere but this cruelty, this hate and its scale is more than disturbing - it is revolting.

We’ve all heard the stories about tRump’s approval “plummeting,” but it’s not true. Yes, it stands low, at 35-37%, but it stubbornly stays there and doesn’t drop no matter what happens! It is truly depressing that fully a third of more of our people have joined what amounts to a cult of personality that is so vile.

I invite you and your readers to visit two local websites bill themselves as “conservative” — “Inside Maryland Politics” and “Everybody’s Maryland Politics.”

Wow!

On either, you can and will be rapidly subjected to a torrent of right-wing poison in response to anything you post that’s critical of Trump and the Trump regime. Toxic responses can include copied memes, insults, obscenities, ad hominem attacks, whataboutisms, false equivalences, and fervent denials of verifiable facts.

It’s an eye-opening exhibition of the Trump/MAGA cult’s behavior, mind-set, and ignorance.

Try it for yourself and, as they say, “read and weep.”

tRump encouraged all the bigots to stand up and shout how proud they are of their bigotry. And each one seems to egg on the others. We may rid ourselves of tRump, but the rest will resist and make governing by any Democrat hell.
