Well said, Dan. I never flip the bird at aggressive drivers because of what you wrote. We don't know who has a gun.

When the Far Right started to loom large, I considered buying a weapon. Not a prissy little handgun, but an actual semiauto rifle. If they were coming for this moderate Democrat, I wasn’t going without a fight. Be clear: I never seriously considered buying a gun for more than 2 weeks in my entire life, even as a single woman in Baltimore City. And I did get over this impulse too. But that’s where all this madness can and does lead. I stick by the one thing I know about guns: the leading source of gun deaths is suicide. Let’s talk about that, shall we?

I understand that sentiment.....and your eventual stepping away.

Please add to your list of various shootings stray bullets, i.e. Mckinsey Elliott, the mother of a Navel Academy student in Annapolis, people in their homes where bullets penetrate etc.

Amen.

Why is this so hard, for so many, to believe?

Kirk was young and apparently not very well read or educated. Before the so-called information age, he would have been no more than a local bore. Now he is a national martyr. Too bad.

Yes, it’s just an illusion. A killer illusion.

Beware "Blutzuege" Hitler's Martyr Program Starring Horst Wessel in 1930!

Blood Witness (Blutzuege) used as an excuse to kill communists. tRump is using kirk as a right wing martyr .

Everything is a war now and I’m afraid this incident is going to exacerbate things. Dan’s debunking of the car analogy is excellent but have you noticed how aggressive drivers are these days? I agree with bbb and try not to use my New York taught universal hand signal when driving these days.

Eric: I have no doubt that since covid, aggressive driving has increased tremendously. That it coincides with a general narcissism, I believe, is more than coincidental. You know who has emboldened that trend, reinforcing the perils of short-term thinking. Had Kirk thought his words would end his own life? I don't know but like a toddler, I will do what I want now and to hell with everyone else...Dan's excellent piece on the auto accidents issue is the thinking of a mature and civilized adult, lacking in the impulsive one-issue hypocrites.

Just started reading an excellent book by Hopkins professor Anand Pandian called “Something Between Us.” He laments about drivers in massive SUVs and trucks cut off from the world around them. You are correct to note that only one faction in our political landscape stresses the individual. And wouldn’t most presidents try to heal a nation rather than threatening retribution?
