Thank you, Dan Rodricks, for shining a light, exposing this abyss of darkness, hatred and unspeakable cruelty. USAID stood for all that truly made America great. JFK is spinning. And shame on Rubio, who calls himself a Catholic -- and had staunchly supported and praised USAID during his 14 years as a Florida senator.
I agree, Dan. So much good (and good will) lost by a single careless action. So many lives lost. And done in such a devastating fashion. It was a sad harbinger of the cruelty that would follow (and continues to happen) in so many ways.
Thank you for the reminder of this horror that is out of sight so, unfortunately, out of mind for Americans who are struggling with insecurities from so many directions....food....electric bills...jobs... ICE detentions.....voting rights attacks....vaccines....women's health and so much more.
Why does Trump do this? I am reminded of Melania's jacket when she visited a migrant children's detention center in 2018. "I don't really care. Do U?" That sums it up. They don't care.
I agree with both of you. That this horror doesn’t lead the news every day would be inexplicable except for all the other problems, such as those you listed, we all face.
It takes $15 million to protect Russell Vought for a year? Must be a lot of people that hate him. Unconscionable that the lives of innocent children were sacrificed for this.
This is indeed horrible, Dan. But I'd counter that the worst is domestic "law enforcement". Seizure (often violent) of people based on color or race. Warrantless street, factory and farm grabs and jailings of people, many of whom are US citizens or otherwise here legally. Failure to uphold basic US laws and breaking others as they see fit, with only scattered (if increasingly successful) pushback.
Without a law-abiding federal government, USAID will be "only" one of many critical institutions, both foreign and domestic, to fall.
Soft power is overlooked by many Americans because it’s not in their backyard. But if they look at the numbers, it’s overwhelming. So sad. Hopefully USAID will be resurrected at a future date.

It might reflect Vought's grandiose delusions.
Thank you Dan !

It’s all a nightmare that we have to breakthrough!
Killing people is the only plan they have.

Musk and Trump get a twofer...not only do they get to kill a bunch of people but they also get to rub the farmer's nose in their ill advised votes...
Do I believe this Russell Vought person cares about anything but himself? He must be awfully worried to need such extensive protection
Since Trump allowed Elon Musk to destroy USAID I have increased financial support for a number of humanitarian organizations.
Thank you so very much, Dan.
